SCOPE

  1. The IPCS sets the minimum requirements for qualification and certification of Cathodic Protection (CP) personnel working on on-land metallic structures, based on ISO 15257:2017.
  2. Certification under this IPCS confirms the general competence of CP personnel but does not authorize them to operate this remains the employer’s responsibility.
  3. Certified personnel may need additional specialized knowledge related to specific equipment, procedures, materials, or products used by their employer.
  4. Written authorization to operate must be provided by the employer, following a quality procedure that defines required job-specific training and examinations.
  5. The authorization process ensures the personnel’s knowledge of relevant codes, standards, procedures, equipment, and acceptance criteria.
  6. The levels of CP personnel certification covered by this IPCS are defined in accordance with the applicable codes, standards, specifications, and regulations referenced.

CERTIFICATION

Level of Certification

Level 1 Cathodic Protection Data Collector (or Tester) are responsible for gathering CP performance data and performing basic tasks based on procedures from Level 3 personnel. They must record data accurately, understand the fundamentals of CP measurements, recognize common errors, and follow safety protocols, though they do not analyze results.

Level 2 Cathodic Protection Technician are build on Level 1 duties by conducting a wider range of measurements, inspections, and supervisory activities. They organize and classify data, ensure equipment calibration, oversee CP system installations, and perform maintenance. They possess solid knowledge of electricity, corrosion, coatings, and safety but are not responsible for selecting test methods or interpreting results.

Level 3 Cathodic Protection Senior Technician are have an advanced understanding of corrosion principles, electricity, coatings, and CP test procedures. They can perform and supervise all Level 1 and Level 2 tasks, prepare technical instructions, evaluate collected data, and provide guidance to lower-level personnel while ensuring all procedures meet recognized standards and safety requirements.
